Short-term disability
Short-term disability is designed to provide income protection for employees who become totally disabled due to a non-occupational accident, sickness or pregnancy. Flexibility in plan design allows each employer to design a disability program that works with existing sick leave plans and with long-term disability coverage. A typical short-term disability plan pays a weekly benefit for 13 or 26 weeks.
Short-term disability is available as an employer-only paid benefit or as a shared-cost benefit. Employee contributions can be conveniently made through payroll deductions. Benefits are guaranteed-issue based on group size and participation.
